SOCIAL INVESTMENTS

From genocide to corporate responsibility – from local food to global poverty – your wealth can affect social justice issues that reach every corner of the globe.

Social responsibility means making conscious decisions aimed at reducing or preventing negative results for society.  It invites us to consider how our actions affect others.

With that in mind, SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE INVESTING (also known as “Mission-Based” or “Ethical” investing) recognizes that societal concerns and social impact are important components of investment decisions.  “SRI” essentially defines investment success not only in terms of financial returns, but also in terms of mutual benefit.

Since the Quakers prohibited members from participating in the slave trade in 1758, to the Vietnam war and civil rights movement, the framework for socially responsible investing has existed for centuries.  With the sophistication of financial markets, socially responsible investment opportunities now incorporate social justice issues that reach the furthest corners of the Earth.

TYPES OF SOCIAL INVESTMENTS

There are three main types of socially responsible investments.

  1. DIVESTMENT: Owning what you believe in, letting go of what you don’t.  Divestment means avoiding companies that do not meet your Social Criteria.  Your Social Criteria is a set of values, personal to you, that you desire to be reflected in your investment portfolio.  (Click here to determine your Social Criteria).  Click here for an example of divestment.
  2.  ADVOCACY:  Express your financial voice.   SRI mutual funds and other SRI advocacy groups use their ownership leverage to promote more positive internal policies and procedures within companies.
  3. SOLUTION-BASED: Fund solutions, not social dysfunction.  Solution based investments support companies and enterprises who produce products and create stratagies aimed at solving some of the most pressing environmental and sustainability challenges we face today.

The Green and Fair Trade movements, the increasing awareness of human trafficking, and many other issues surfacing shows us that our choices affect everyone on some level.  “When one tugs at a single thing in Nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world.” - John Muir.

It’s time we embraced the fact that our wealth has a voice.
